Deutsche Telekom and United Internet forge De-Mail alliance

  • Standard address ending "de-mail.de"
  • Standard applies for almost two thirds of German e-mail market
  • Shared use of basic technology

Montabaur, March 6, 2012 - Germany's major e-mail service providers Deutsche Telekom and United Inter-net are to provide their customers with addresses bearing the standard ending "de-mail.de". Examples of the new addresses would be: max.lang@t-online.de-mail.de, tina.kurz@gmx.de-mail.de, roy.raab@web.de-mail.de. By using the legislation's name in the domain, Deutsche Telekom and United Internet aim to protect consumers against mistaken identity and provide extra security.

The leading German e-mail brands hope this will simplify communication between future De-Mail users and help successfully establish De-Mail throughout the country. Together, the four brands T-Online, 1&1, GMX and WEB.DE account for almost two thirds of the German e-mail market. Over one million people have already reserved their preferred De-Mail address with these companies.

United Internet and Deutsche Telekom also agreed to use a standard, shared De-Mail technical infrastructure and to cooperate in future on the continued development of the core De-Mail system. The two companies will market their De-Mail offerings separately to private customers, small firms and major corporations.

Binding, secure and easy, De-Mail also saves time and money

Both private users and companies can use De-Mail to send or receive news and documents safely and confidentially with verifiable evidence of the exchange. One key benefit of De-Mail is that messages can be sent and received conveniently from the computer. In future, users will also be able to use De-Mail on business trips or holiday, via their smartphones, tablets or laptops. This helps customers save valuable time and enhances their mobility. There is also strong interest in De-Mail among business users and in the public sector. Not only can they save costs for processing, printing, envelopes and postage, but also gain a fast and binding communication channel to customers and citizens.
